One of the big events in fingerstyle guitar playing many years ago was the publication of a music book called “Beatles For Classical Guitar”. This was the world’s first attempt to mix the simplicity of the Beatles’ tunes with the complexity of classical guitar technique. One of the first things that fingerpicking guitar players who were not trained in classical guitar playing noticed was that the fingerings to some of the tunes were much more difficult to execute than they had been used to. But no pain, no gain. The trickier arrangements indicated how much more musical richness had been found in these more complicated arrangements of familiar songs.

Some guitar players thought that a book of classical guitar arrangements of the work of The Beatles was just a gimmick. They expected that a minimal amount of work went into these arrangements just to produce popular music for the “egghead market”. In fact the songs are all substantial arrangements that many classical guitarists find extremely satisfying to play.

People who loved the Beatles’ music found that the songs had not been rendered unrecognizable in the process of arranging them for fingerpicking. The songs were arranged for guitar players who could read standard musical notation and they were not the kind of arrangements that could be played right through on sight the first time you saw them. The pieces asked you to pay some attention and make some effort. Once you get the feel of the way the songs have been interpreted you can let your familiarity with the songs guide you as you play.

Some guitar players are going to feel cheated by the fact that there are not tabs but the pieces are a bit too complicated to be translated into tab effectively. Guitarists who are used to playing using sheet music will be gratified that the music is not made more complicated by the addition of a tab line.

Here is the list of songs:

Across The Universe Ask Me Why Come Together Cry Baby Cry Day Tripper For No One From Me To You Hello, Goodbye Here Comes The Sun I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party I Will I’ll Follow The Sun I’m A Loser I’m Happy Just To Dance With You I’m Only Sleeping I’m So Tired In My Life The Long And Winding Road Maxwell’s Silver Hammer No Reply Nowhere Man P.S. I Love You Penny Lane Something Things We Said Today This Boy (Ringo’s Theme) Two Of Us While My Guitar Gently Weeps Yesterday You’re Going To Lose That Girl

You might be surprised by the inclusion of some of the tunes in a collection of guitar solos. So go ahead and try them out.

Some experienced guitar players will tell you that the steel strings of an electric guitar are too hard on the fingers to allow a newbie guitarist to start playing right away. Well, that’s true but the electric guitar needs very little left hand pressure to make clean sounding notes. So you can learn to play the electric guitar right from the start of learning, as long as you know that if you end up with little cuts in your left hand fingertips you are going to have to take a break from playing to let them heal.As far as what to learn is concerned, you will find electric guitar lessons easily on the internet. There are lessons on how to understand the basics in music, how to read sheet music and tab and chord charts for just about any song you would want to play. You can make use of your favorite search engine to find electric guitar lessons. You can search using “complete guitar course”, “guitar lessons”, “electric guitar lessons” or you can take another approach and search for chords for your favorite songs. So just type the song title together with the words “chords” or “chord charts” or “tabs”.

One of your favorite sites when you are learning to play the electric guitar will be YouTube. You will find guitar players of advanced levels of technique showing you how to play songs and giving details of commonly used electric guitar playing techniques like muting, string skipping, tapping, and so on.

Of course, the thing that will put together all the material you have found on the internet is your practice. You will not find any shortcuts - you will need to put in the hours on hard, unfamiliar work that will at first, be boring and unrewarding. This is the way all guitarists learn and all guitarists have had to go through the tedium and drudgery before sighting the light at the end of the tunnel.

The lessons you have found in books and on the web will certainly help you to stay focused but you will probably have to go through a stage where you are wondering whether you really want to learn to play the electric guitar. Questions like, “how long is this going to take?” and “is the tin whistle really the instrument I should be learning?” will come into your head, driven by the physical toll that hours of guitar practice take on your body and your emotions.

If you are learning songs from guitar chord charts or tabs, you should take your time and learn the chord sequences without having to look at the tab. Once you have the sequence of chords in your memory you can concentrate on the strumming patterns you are learning.

When you decide that you want to learn to play guitar you are starting out on a journey. Every day you need to continue and you need to be able to practice and experiment without the help of a teacher who is being paid to keep you on track, correct your mistakes and reassure you when you are feeling like you are getting nowhere in your guitar playing. So you need some tools that you can get from the internet for free and you need to remember to use these tools, otherwise you will find your guitar playing getting stale or stopping altogether.Let’s start with the next best thing to having a teacher helping you. Guitar forums. There are lots of them on the net, some specializing in particular guitar playing styles, some with boards for focusing on aspects of guitar that need special attention. The members of guitar forums are a mix of newbies and seasoned guitarists. They all have one thing in common in that they have been where you are now. They know the difficulties of learning the basics of guitar and they are more than willing to help new guitarists get over the first bumps on the road.

Forums are driven by member participation, so once you join, you will find that there is a place for newcomers to introduce themselves. You would usually go to that thread and write a little about yourself and then visit the other threads to see what the forum has to offer you.

The next thing you need to do is find yourself some videos to watch on sites like YouTube. To take advantage of the enormous number of guitar video lessons available for free on the internet, you need to be very focused on what style of music you want to play. Have a list of songs and start looking for videos that teach you to play them. As you go along you will also get to know the names of some guitar playing techniques that you need to learn and you should look for video lessons on these. There is no guitar technique that is really hard to learn; they all just take practice. The thing is though, explaining how to do them is not too easy. With learning to play guitar a video is worth a thousand words.

As you get to become clear on what kind of guitar music you want to play, you can do internet searches for tabs and chords for your favorite songs. There are many sites that archive free guitar tabs and you will have no trouble finding and downloading the material you need to get you started on playing. One thing to remember is that sometimes when a guitarist posts a video on YouTube he will provide a link to his own site where he has made tabs available for you, so check out the info printed alongside the video.

The rest of the tools you need are bits of software that are essential for helping you learn to play guitar. You can get free metronomes and guitar tuners from the internet. You just download them for free and install them. If you do a search for them the first results you get are usually the big software download sites, so you should have no problems with viruses or spyware. There are also guitar tab editors that you can get for free or on a trial basis. Some of the trials are unlimited timewise but some of the features are disabled.

Tab editors enable you to read the tabs and hear the tablature as MIDI files. GuitarPro is a good one that is free and you will find many GuitarPro files for songs and instrumental pieces in all guitar genres.

The guitar player in bluegrass music was not always play solos. As with some other folk styles from various parts of the world, the guitar was originally just part of the rhythm section. The guitarist could be heard playing the odd bass run but apart from that he was in the background.Nowadays bluegrass guitar is not only a lead instrument in the band but the playing techniques can be quite complex sounding. The early greats of bluegrass guitar playing like Lester Flatt and Charlie Monroe used a combination of fingerpicking and flatpicking using a thumbpick. A common technique which you can also hear in country music is to play bass notes and runs on the E A D strings and melodic passages on the G B E strings.

Flatpicking has become quite common in bluegrass music but that does not mean that playing bluegrass guitar has become easier. It just means you have to work as hard on your flatpicking technique as you would have had to work on your fingerpicking in the early days. A great flatpicker does not need the extra notes provided by fingerpicking to sustain interest. Just take a listen to the CDs and watch the videos featuring flatpickers like Norman Blake, Tony Rice, Dan Crary, Clarence White and Doc Watson.

If you are new to the guitar as well as bluegrass music, you will find that you need to work on the use of your plectrum using up as well as down strokes. Practice doing alternate up and down strokes slowly and smoothly using a metronome to keep time. For bluegrass picking use a heavy gauge pick but as with everything, you should try different ones out till you find what’s right for you.

You will see and hear that a lot of bluegrass guitar playing consists of the guitarist playing bass notes and strumming in between. A simple example is to hold a C chord in the first position and pick the C note on the fifth string. Now use your plectrum to strum the other strings. Next, pick the E note on the fourth string and strum the rest of the strings again. Once you have done this a few times you will recognize the familiar bluegrass sound that you hear on CDs emerge from under your fingers.

Once you have got an idea of the guitar players you should be listening to and watching, you will be able to go looking for bluegrass guitar tabs. With these you can learn picking patterns that you can apply to any songs you learn. You will also be able to pick up tabs for bluegrass fiddle tunes you can learn to play on the guitar. Try any bluegrass forums you find, as well as tab archives.

Let’s take a look at how we see classical guitarists and standard musical notation. My perception of a classical guitar player is someone who is tied to the sheet music from day one. He will not play a note unless it is written on the page. Furthermore, he probably belongs to the school of thought that says that tablature is an inferior form of written music. Incomplete and useless for learning new pieces. My perception of the classical guitar player can’t be entirely accurate because there are lots of classical guitar tabs available on the internet, so maybe attitudes are changing gradually.

Tab is not a bad thing in itself. It is a perfectly good way to quickly find the notes on the guitar as you learn a new piece. The fact that tab does not include all the information you need to play a piece has given birth to a widespread prejudice against tab simply because many musicians think that the written notation should be the sole source of information needed to learn the piece.

Where guitar tab falls down is if you use tab to learn which notes to play, you also need to have an audio record of the piece to refer to in order to play the notes in time. So yes, tab is an incomplete source of music notation but if people want to use tab anyway, then that is their concern.

Back in the nineteen seventies classical violinist Yehudi Menuhin collaborated with sitar player Ravi Shankar on some records. The resulting music was fantastic but Menuhin had to have his music written for him whereas Shankar was able to improvise his parts. So, music notation gives us a more complete representation of the music but if we rely on it too much we learn music in an environment that does not foster musical creativity. The classical guitarist, at least in my mind, is concerned with expressing the composer’s music through his relationship with the guitar. Improvisation and creativity of any kind are not necessary.

If you want to learn classical guitar and to read standard musical notation then there are a number of books you can work through to get a grip on sheet music written for guitar. If you work at it for a month or so you will have an understanding of single note melodies written to be played in the first position. There is a number of pieces by Sor, Carulli and Carcassi for example, which you can get a great deal of satisfaction from playing using your new grasp of sheet music.

There are some great books available for learning classical guitar through music notation, the tutors by Aaron Shearer, Fred Noad and Christopher Parkening are obvious examples. These books will give you the full story to learn a piece of music but learning tab as well gives you access to a broader appreciation of music and the opportunity to discover parts of your musical self opened up by the work of learning music through tab.

Of course, it gets more difficult as you begin to learn pieces that contain chords in the melody and more than one melody line. The task of learning which finger to use to play the notes as well as the left hand fingering begins to make learning new pieces more tedious.

The guitar is the universal musical instrument. No other instrument fits into so many different styles of music. If you learn to play guitar chords you make practically any kind of music accessible to your creative impulses. There are many exotic chords, particularly in jazz music but the building blocks of guitar music are the common open chords played at the first position on the guitar fretboard which can be learnt by anybody.

If you are able to learn to play a few basic guitar chords you can play the rhythm for any song you hear. For some guitar students learning those first chords is quite intimidating, fortunately you can still make a start with guitar chords using two- or three-note chords. These chords are not as versatile as the fuller chords but they are a great start to the practical work of getting the fingers working and the musical mind and feelings expressing themselves.

To start to play guitar chords, pick up your guitar and hold it in a playing position with your left hand thumb touching the back of the guitar’s neck. You’ve seen guitar players at work, hold your fingers in some imitation of how you have seen guitarists’ fingers ready to press down on the strings. You don’t need any musical knowledge to get a feel for guitar playing. Just play a scale starting with an open string, then going on to playing the notes at the first, second, third and fourth frets.

When you are reading chord charts you will see that the fingers are referred to by numbers. The index finger is 1, the middle finger is 2, the ring finger is 3 and the little finger is number 4.

Now let’s play a guitar chord:

This is the A major chord in the first position. In this chord you will be making use of open strings, so this is called an open chord.

Step One: Put your little finger on the second string at the second fret. This sounds the note C sharp (written as C#).

Step Two: Place your ring finger on the third string at the second fret. This is the note A.

Step Three: Put your middle finger on the fourth string at the second fret. This sounds the E note.

The open fifth string sounds the A note and the open sixth and first strings sound the E note.

Using your thumb or a plectrum, strum the strings from the sixth to the first. You might need to make some adjustments to get all you notes at the second fret sounding clean. Okay, that’s your first chord.

To make fingering guitar chords easier, keep your left hand fingernails short and practice for at least half an hour every day, preferably an hour. Get together some sheet music or guitar tab for some songs that you would like to play. You will be surprised how many songs you can play using a few chords.

Many people think bout being able to play the guitar but need reassurance about what to expect when they try to learn guitar at a late age in life. By late I mean forties or fifties but really it the term can apply to any age past the teen years. A bonus for mature age guitar students is that if you learn guitar it can actually help keep your hands and mind alive and healthy. There’s an additional benefit in that your friends and family will think you are a hero before you even are able to play.Learning guitar late in life is open to anybody but the question is if it is easier to learn guitar as a young person, does that mean it is harder when you are older? Let’s say you are able to do one lesson per week with about a half hour a day’s practice?

You will probably benefit from getting a decent guitar to learn on, whether electric or acoustic, and the general rule about acoustic guitars being kinder to the hands in the first couple of months of playing still applies.

Older guitar students so tend to have some hassles learning music theory and note reading but it is worth the struggle and many guitar players use tab to learn material and tabs are available freely on the internet for any song or instrumental that a beginner could want to learn.

If you find yourself struggling with the more theoretical side of music, then you could make up for it by concentrating more on technique. You can learn a lot about the guitar just using your ear and a diagram of the notes on the fretboard, and remember that many guitarists who played all their lives never learnt to read music.

Changing chords is the first big hurdle for guitar players of any age, and can lead to a mental block for older students. So, just start with getting the chord shapes right and work on changing from one chord to the other slowly and carefully. If you are troubled by training your hands to do the chord shapes you might want to consider buying yourself a Gripmaster that helps you strengthen your fingers and develop callouses on the fingertips. Light gauge strings are a little easier for an older guitar student to practice on.

Something that is possibly a little more important for an older newbie guitar player is the need for daily practice. Make yourself a schedule and stick to it religiously. It might do some good to occasionally get a lesson from someone who is not your regular guitar teacher. Even from a friend who does not play in your style. The change can help keep you out of a rut.

Another tip for the mature guitar newbie is to keep your guitar handy all the time. Sometimes if you have a bunch of family and professional commitments that keep you busy, you can do more playing by grabbing the guitar for a couple of minutes when you can instead of trying to find a regular half hour a day. If this is the way you have to go to get your quota of practice, then so be it.

Finally, you will possibly need to keep reminding yourself that the reason you started to learn guitar was basically to do with fun. Don’t get too bogged down in the idea of guitar practice being what you “have to” do. Not having your parents to cook and clean for you, will put you at a disadvantage compared to most young people so don’t be surprised if younger students progress faster than you. The point is if you keep at it you will be playing any song you want within a couple of years.

Guitar tabs, because of their code-like looks, can be very confusing, especially to someone who is trying to play the guitar for the first time. What do you do with all those lines, black dots, letters, and numbers? For an inside look into reading guitar tabs, read on.The lines to the guitar strings on the guitar. Pictures of the chords of which you should play on your guitar are all that tabs really are. You just need to decipher the tabs (also known as the half-dozen lines), these are the same as the 6 strings on the guitar. So the top-most line is E, which is the thinnest string on your guitar, and the bottom line corresponds to the lower E string, which is the thickest string on the guitar. Guitar tabs correlate to the strings E, B, G, D, A, and E in that order.

Check the number on each line. Recognizing that the tabs correlate to the guitar strings makes understanding the numbers of each line easier. Every number represents a different fret on the guitar neck, separated by a vertical line. The very first fret is the one which is closest to the body of the guitar and then increases by one - so 2, 3, 4, and so on. Begin by saying the number of each line and put a finger on the right string. When the umber on the tab is 0, you must remove your finger from the string and play an open note - that is don’t press down. If there is a number such as 2, 3 or 4 then you place your finger on that particular fret to perform a particular note on the instrument.

Any numbers appearing in the same stack must be played simultaneously. Whenever you see a group of numbers in a vertical row, it is to show that these notes are to be played together. The way you read guitar music is from left to right, so anything written vertically (up and down) is played together. And if you see a letter over the above-mentioned vertical stack, sometimes accompanied by a sharp or flat sign, this is the note name of the chord. Be sure you know what each of the characters mean. You could make note of a few symbols along the way which coincide with notes situated on the guitar tabs.

If you see an “H” between the original fret number this means apply a hammer and it will be written as such: “7h9″ or “7^9″.}

If you see a “P” you need to pull off between the notes- it will appear as “9p7″ or “9^7″.

When a note needs to be bent, you will see a “b” placed in the middle of both frets; any note that needs to be released after bending will be notated using an “r” rather than a “b.” - so it will appear as “7b9r7″.

If you read guitar music, you’ll find out that slides are also popular. They appear as a frontward slash “/” for and ascending slide and a backward slash “\” is written for a downward slide. Occasionally “S” is used but that does not identify which way to slide. If the music has to be muted, you will see an “X” or a dot over the particular string.

A tap must occur (or a pull on, hammer off) when you see the letter “T”.

The letters “TP” indicate tremolo picking, and palm muting is signified by the letters “PM.”

Reading guitar tabs is fairly easy and they are written in a very straightforward manner. The tablature will indicate the required action and the number of the fret with the first letter of the action the majority of the time. Favorite tunes become easier to pick up quickly as you become more familiar with guitar tabs.
